Time today is scarce; we are always running out. But there are two historical meanings for the word TIME – and the second one can spark a change in our life!
Two Viewpoints of TIME
1. TIME as a Calendar or Clock
This is the time that marches on, breathing down our necks. Deadlines to meet. Appointments to keep. Dinner to make. Monthly reports to finish. Kids to bathe. Errands to run. Repairs to finish.
We all know this side of Time. It’s the ticking clock – the demanding calendar.
2. TIME as an Opportunity
But historically in ancient Greek, time had a sister word – Kairos. This word makes all the difference. This word gives us hope for meaning.
Because Kairos means “Time Opportunity”. That fitting time. That perfect moment. That timely season.
An example would be in picking fruit. We can pick early, but the fruit is not yet ripe so it is hard and possibly bitter. We can pick late, but it would be rotted or eaten by bugs. No, we should pick in that perfect time span that offers the best quality – the Kairos time! Did you know that this word for “time opportunity” is used more often the the bible than the word for “clock time”?
Now we have a more meaningful way to approach our day. Today is not just a series of tasks, but sprinkled in are moments of “opportunity time”. Encouragement for a co-worker. Helping my child with homework. Volunteering at the local care center. Reading my kids a book. Going on date night. Calling my parents. Improving the organization so employees have more time. Visiting a sick friend. Helping someone in need. Meditating on what really matters. Sharing my HOPE with others…
Wow, what a difference in my day when I look for the Time Opportunities! I’m not focused on the schedule, but rather on the needs and opportunities.
Purpose becomes clear. I become calmer. I sleep better. I feel HOPE!
I pray that your day is filled with more and more Time Opportunities!
